The scorecard
Scorecard first, against last week's Weekly Brief:
Last week's line: a daily close above $82,250 reopens $85,000.
What printed: Monday's close (Sep 21) came near $86,600, the high $87,374, the second rejection $87,272 Wednesday.
What did not print: $82,250 was never retested, low after the break $82,698. The $80,000 daily-close trigger went unused. The True Market Mean was not retested either; Glassnode has since marked it up to $77,000.
Eleven weeks of blockade
The US reinstated its blockade on Iran on July 14, and by early September Iran had gone about seven weeks without a crude cargo reaching China, the first time on record (Reuters). August loadings ran 220,000 to 255,000 barrels a day (Vortexa and Kpler via Reuters), but the crude is stacking up on tankers inside the strait instead of reaching China. Kpler counted 49.2 million barrels of crude out of Hormuz in the week of Sep 13, about 7 million a day and just under half of 2025's roughly 15 million. On Tuesday Trump told the UN he faced a choice between a deal with Iran and driving it "into hell with no chance of survival" (Fox News), and said in the same breath that a deal would come right after the election. The war has stopped being a headline risk and become a supply fact that prices every market this column covers, the chain we traced in the war in the price of everything.
Oil first
Brent traded at $105.76 on Monday, up 1.4% on the day and roughly 17% in a month (Trading Economics). The cargos stopped reaching China in July, the price moved before the barrels did, and it has kept moving since, because the market is pricing the strait reopening on Washington's calendar, not the oil industry's.
Then the yield
The ten-year closed Thursday at 5.18% (Federal Reserve H.15), its highest since 2007, and read 5.21% on Monday (Trading Economics). The Fed hiked to 3.75% to 4.00% on Sep 16, and CME FedWatch puts the odds of another hike on Oct 27 to 28 near 70% (CNN). The chain runs from war spending and energy inflation to a central bank that is still tightening, and Bitcoin sits at the end of it. One counterweight held: the US and China extended their trade truce to Jan 10, 2027 (AP). For what a hiking Fed does to this market, the FOMC Cheat Sheet is the free primer.
What Bitcoin did
The fade ran from the second rejection to the week's close at $84,457, up 3.97% from the prior close (TradingView, Bitstamp). The new week opened near $84,400 and printed $83,204 by Monday morning. Leverage left with the price. Futures open interest is down roughly $7 billion from its $61.5B Sep 22 peak to near $54.5B, and funding went from +0.0109% last Monday to -0.0013% at the Sep 28 02:00 read, the lowest in weeks (CoinGlass). The ETF tape ran the other way: +$2,385.8M net for the week on Farside, the largest since October 2025, with the $999.0M on Sep 21 the largest single-day inflow of 2026, then decelerating every session to $134.5M Friday. ETF buyers kept buying through the fade, in shrinking size, and leverage did not rebuild.
The data wall
August PCE and the Q2 GDP third estimate land Wednesday, and Q3 closes that night at 24:00 UTC. September payrolls land Friday with consensus at +98,000 against +162,000 in August (Trading Economics). September CPI follows on Oct 14, ahead of the Fed's October meeting on Oct 27 to 28. Price is under the shelf it lost Monday morning, oil and the ten-year are still setting the range, and this week's data decides whether Bitcoin keeps tracking the yield.
