China Q3 GDP printed at 4.5%, beating the 4.4% consensus. September retail sales rose 1.1%, nearly double the 0.6% forecast. Bitcoin climbed back above $82,500 as US futures rebounded and oil fell, with China’s beat in the mix.
This move is not driven by crypto-native news. Spot Bitcoin ETFs reportedly saw outflows of $228 million from October 12 to 16. There is no major regulatory headline. This is macro. The market is repricing global growth expectations, and Bitcoin is acting like the high-beta risk asset it has become. Alongside the Chinese data, Brent crude pulled back about 2% to $107.57 after Trump waived sanctions on Russian oil. That retreat in oil eased immediate inflation pressure, creating a second catalyst for risk assets. They gave price the push toward $83k, the first step toward the upper band at about $85.6k.
The technical setup was already compressed before the data hit. Bitcoin spent the last week trading in a tight range, with daily Bollinger Bands at their tightest since early August. The $80,000 floor was defended through last week’s hotter-than-expected CPI and PPI prints. Sellers tested the floor twice and failed to break it. The range remains intact, but volatility is compressed enough that it will not stay this quiet for long.
On the daily chart, the Bollinger Bands have narrowed from roughly $12k wide in early October to about $6k now, with the upper band near $85.6k and the lower near $79.6k. The lower band sits on the $80k floor, which is why the recent wick got bought back. A daily close outside either band, with the bands opening up, would be the first real sign of direction.
In recent weeks, the Asian session has frequently set the early direction when the first major data of the week arrives into thinner weekend liquidity. The catalyst has rotated, from war headlines to bond market shocks to macro data, but Bitcoin has tended to follow the broader risk appetite. This morning, China’s growth beat provided that catalyst.
There is a macro anchor coming. The next Fed meeting is October 28. Hike odds jumped after the CPI surprise, then fell back below 15% once Chair Warsh signaled a hold is possible. A hold is the base case, so the tone of the statement is the risk.
If $83,000 is reclaimed and held on a daily close, the next meaningful test is the $84,000 zone that has rejected price before. A clean break there opens the path to the high $80s. If the macro bid fades and the risk-on sentiment reverses, the $80,000 floor comes back into play as the critical invalidation level.
The immediate question is whether the Chinese data is a one-day catalyst or the start of a broader global growth repricing. For now, Bitcoin is trading China and oil together.
